Sokcho

The gateway to Seoraksan National Park, plus beaches, a fishing harbour and the best fried chicken market in Korea.

Sokcho pairs Korea's most dramatic mountains with a working fishing town. Most visitors come for Seoraksan and stay for the seafood.

Getting there

Express buses from Seoul Express Bus Terminal or Dong Seoul take about 2.5 hours and run every 30 minutes. There is no train yet; the KTX to Gangneung plus a bus is an alternative.

Must-do

  1. Seoraksan: cable car to Gwongeumseong for views without a hike; Ulsanbawi (4–5 hours round trip) or Biseondae for a real one. Autumn foliage peaks in mid-October.
  2. Sokcho Jungang Market: dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) and sundae; eat at the market.
  3. Abai Village: cross the harbour on the hand-pulled Gaetbae ferry.
  4. Sokcho and Naksan beaches; Naksansa temple on the cliff.
  5. Yeongnangho Lake walk at sunset.
