Jeju Island
Volcanic coastline, waterfalls and Hallasan — a driving island one hour's flight from Seoul.
Jeju is Korea's island getaway: lava coast, tangerine farms, waterfalls and the country's highest mountain. Flights from Seoul Gimpo take about an hour and run every few minutes.
Getting around
Jeju is a driving island. Buses exist but are slow between sights. Most visitors rent a car; an International Driving Permit is required, and rental counters are next to the airport. If you cannot drive, book day tours by bus from Jeju City or Seogwipo.
Two bases
- Jeju City (north): airport, Dongmun Market, more restaurants.
- Seogwipo (south): waterfalls, Jungmun resorts, warmer and quieter.
Many people split 1–2 nights in each.
Must-do
- Seongsan Ilchulbong sunrise peak (east) — 30-minute climb.
- Manjanggul lava tube and the eastern coast road.
- Jeongbang or Cheonjiyeon waterfall in Seogwipo.
- Hallasan — the Yeongsil or Eorimok trails for views without the summit; Gwaneumsa or Seongpanak for the summit (reservation required).
- Udo island by ferry from Seongsan; rent an electric bike there.
