Gangneung
East-coast beach town 2 hours from Seoul by KTX: Gyeongpo Beach, coffee street, sunrise and Jeongdongjin.
Gangneung is where Seoul goes for a sea weekend. The KTX made it a two-hour trip, and the town has beaches, a café culture that calls itself Korea's coffee capital, and a famous sunrise.
Getting there
KTX from Seoul Station to Gangneung Station in about 2 hours. From the station, buses and taxis reach Gyeongpo in 15 minutes.
Must-do
- Gyeongpo Beach and Gyeongpo Lake — rent a bike and loop the lake.
- Anmok Beach coffee street: cafés with sea views, the local ritual.
- Jeongdongjin: the train station closest to the sea in Korea; sunrise is the draw. Take the early train or stay nearby.
- Ojukheon and Seongyojang traditional houses.
- Jumunjin fish market and the breakwater made famous by a K-drama.

When
Summer (July–August) is beach season and crowded. Autumn and winter are quiet, cold and clear; winter sunrises over the East Sea are the best.
